I have traveled to a lot of places in my life but without a doubt one place holds a special place in my heart. Maybe its because I spent countless days there with my Mom & Dad. Maybe its because I now get to share it with my children. Maybe its the peace and serenity I feel in my soul while I am there. Truth is it’s all of those things and more.
Maramec Springs is a magical place! While standing on its banks the deep connection to nature is unmistakable. The cool wind blowing across the water in the early months of spring as a light fog blankets the surrounding hillside is unforgettable. The sounds of the water flowing over the rocks and downed trees is hypnotic and soon your mind forgets every burden as the pureness of nature fills your senses. You find yourself standing alongside anglers from all over the world patiently waiting, then the unmistakable sound of the morning buzzer pierces the silence. A symphony of controlled chaos ensues as lures and line fill the stream. The air crackles with excitement, as rainbow trout break the surface of the water, and eager anglers enjoy the morning catch.
I was fortunate that my father took me to such a magical place as a kid. And even now, though he is no longer with us, I feel him beside me offering encouragement and words of wisdom as I fish the banks. I feel like a young boy again learning to tie a line and set a hook. I feel free on those banks, unburdened by life. I am blessed to be able to now take my family and pass on the magic. I am grateful and humbled to have a wife who loves the springs as much as I do, if not more. She has taken to it with joy and enthusiasm. Even teaching herself to clean and filet trout. I am a truly blessed man and will never take for granted the magic of the springs.
